^There you go. I get my alternators for closer to $180, but still a substantial savings to just replace the VR if you are so inclined.

So it turns out that the shop that put the alternator in, never clipped in the wire completely 🤬

But I also found this hard plastic hose lying in the bay to the right of the alternator not connected to anything. There's ahook end that was up at the top near the atf fluid reservoir. Any idea where it goes or what it's for?? Tried getting a photo uploaded but it keeps rejecting it

How critical is it that I get it installed correctly?

It is installed correctly. The lower end is attached to the front diff. The upper end just hangs there in space.

The lower end isn't attached to anything right now. It was just hanging out in the engine bay not attached to anything.

Lower end should be attached to the front diff.

Should go on the nipple sticking out of the top of the diff shown here: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=31_0514

Happy to report that replacement of the voltage regulator and making sure the wiring was fully clipped has solved my electrical issues. I'm sure that I just needed to properly clip the wire in but I had the alternator out and the regulator on hand so better safe than sorry.
