Depends on a number of factors but the most important is what does the label on YOUR power steering fluid reservoir state - ATF or CHF 11S - 'cause they vary a bit.

If it says ATF then stick with ATF and not a power steering fluid like the Redline product. Unless you want to do a full flush and replacement.

*edit* - hang on - just read the Redline specs - seems this stuff IS compatible with ATF... so maybe it's OK to use where your reservoir states ATF and NOT CHF 11S..

Hi Wpoll,

Thanks for the info. I was looking at some older threads regarding what the cap said, but I was hoping there’d be some updates on procedures. Looks like this topic is still quite vague... My cap says ATF, so if you have any recommendations in that direction, I’d be happy to hear thanks.

What's the current fluid colour? If it's red, use ATF (or similar) and if it's green-ish, then using power steering fluid (CHF 11S etc.).

Sorry, the fluid isn't whitish red, I believe it to be red, though i'm also colorblind.... anyway, pretty sure its red. The whiteness that I recalled was the bottom plastic of the PS reservoir. Just did the hoses to the reservoir so now I REALLY need to figure out what kind of fluid I need. The pump is screaming with the engine just idling lol...

There's a saying about oil (that also applies to power steering fluid)

Good oil is better than bad oil is better than no oil....

Get something in there ASAP - preferably a good quality synthetic ATF. The Redline stuff is probably fine, either their D4 ATF or the power steering fluid.

I'd hate to see your next thread be about how to replace a ruined power steering pump...

Couldn’t agree with you more on that one... I didn’t actually drive the car. I just pulled it out the garage to work in the light. Ended up putting some Mobil1 advanced full synthetic into the PS. Stuff is also red.. Looks to be working well, car is quiet and steering feels good, but I only took it for a short shakedown drive. Will report back if anything happens. Thanks for the help again Wpoll!

I have always flushed and filled my BMW PS fluids (which specify ATF) with Amsoil Universal full synthetic ATF and have no complaints and things seem to continue to run fine.

It is nice to see that Amsoil made the BMW PS SBS list.

This is also the fluid I choose to use for my E53 and E46 automatic transmissions, also with very good results.
