Continuity check? Timing chain replacement

Hi All,

Do I have to check the continuity while in replacing timing chain?
Here is my case. I have a 2000 E53 4.4i with 150000 miles. I bought German Auto Solution tools and followed the guide step by step. https://www.germanautosolutions.com/..._tools_diy.php

But the issue is checking the continuity in the steps of #63. For bank 5-8, one of the three pins and the VANOS unit itself have the audible beeping, the other two pins doesn't. For bank 1-4, all the three pins doesn't have the beep but the unit itself has it. I tried all my thoughts but running out of idea.

I know some posts support the idea of not necessary to check the continuity. But I am curious what caused this issue. A bad VANOS unit or something else?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

both should beep when in the fully rotated position. if they don't something is wrong.

Here quote a note from Beisan Systems - Procedures - M62TU Vanos Procedure


Fully retard bank 1 & 2 vanos timing. For each vanos perform following.
Connect ohm meter positive lead to one of vanos test pins and negative lead to intake camshaft first bearing cap stud (digital multimeter & alligator clip wires).
Turn on ohm meter (digital multimeter on ohm setting).
Install vanos turning tool onto vanos center shaft. Insert tool pins into vanos shaft pin holes.
Turn vanos shaft counter clockwise until end adjustment position (vanos turning tool & 24mm socket 1/2" / 1/2" ratchet).
Caution: Do not place notable pressure on vanos turning tool as pins will break.
Ohm meter will display 0 ohm when vanos at fully retarded position.
Note: Vanos internal piston will connect with vanos test pins when fully retarded and cause a short reading (0 ohm).
Note: When ratchet pressure is released ohm reading can change to open circuit (infinite ohm). This is normal.
Note: In many cases a short will not be achieved and a 0 ohm reading will not occur. This is normal.

Is this a good news for me? It's normal if no audible beep? Did I misunderstand it?

Depends if you get the audible beep with ratchet pressure and barely loose it. If so, you should be ok, if not, you need to remove them and clean them.



When I did mine, I had beeping with the ratchet and if released gently.

I have the same year and motor in my X. I did my guides last year. So from experience i found out that this in reality this is a nonsense double check step. Just make sure the vanos is turned all the way to the left (counter clockwise). There is a hard stop. This is where it should be. I didn't even test mine. Turn it a few times clockwise and counter clockwise to remove the oil from the vanos system. This oil will prevent the 0 ohm reading. If afterwards when you remove the GAS blocks from the back of the intake and the intake shifts, your vanos needs to be resealed. If you have done the timing chain guides, it doesn't take much extra to do the vanos seals. I would also recommend Beisan Seals. Or send them out to a Polish company Mehenker (you can find them on facebook) they rebuild them for a good price and also replace the black plastic ring. Read all of the instructions carefully and replace all of the pieces they recommend. It will make your motor quiet and return good gas mileage.

Thank you both! I will order the parts and do it myself. BTW, do I need order pin contacts because two pins are little bit loosen.

No, the pins are not necessary for the vanos. Take a look at the link provided and they remove the black plastic ring with a metal one eliminating all of the pins. As long as you have an oil seal then all is well. Repair VANOS BMW M62TU V8

Don't forget to replace all of the other parts that Beisan systems instructions recommend. These are important for the oil seals of the vanos and to have the motor quiet and diesel sound free.
