There must be somehow to also get some water in the tank. There could be something different in how the fuel is handled that mixes it differently or the fact the fuel filter is 20x as large on the X5 that the other car isn't affected. It could be the high compression engine more affected. In any case I would definitely add some antifreeze to the X5 gas when temp is below freezing.
