I haven't tried it, so I won't say much..but the NAV-equipped X5's have a bunch of stuff /wiring in the rear near the battery..which means you would have to source all that and install it. An aftermarket e53-specific Android unit with NAV, bluetooth, and bunch of other goodies is the way to go..I installed two xtrons units -one each in my 2 X5's ..One of which had factory NAV...
Come to think of it, if you do retrofit factory NAV, I think I have some of the pieces...although I think I sold the head unit... Last edited by Effduration; 02-08-2020 at 03:16 PM. |

I agree. The maps for stock unit haven't been updated in a long time and you'll get much more functionality from an Android unit. Probably better visibility in sunlight too.

Forget the old factory Nav unit. You can get an Android unit that has apple carplay or google drive. plus you can use apps like waze which is much better than what the original nav system has to offer.

Yes and no. The last and final map update is 2015. There are workarounds unless you are trying to find a new development, you can use intersections. If and it's a big IF the screen is in good shape there should be no issues seeing it in most sunlight conditions.

It would involve a ton of work for not much benefit. YOu have to put the radio in the trunk. You would need a bunch of wring from the head unit to the trunk and the biggy is, you don't have a gps antenna. For all of the work involved and its poor functionality compared to an android unit, you are way better off with an android unit.
That said, I have my old factory nav, head unit and radio if you want them. I replaced my factory nav with an Avin Avant 4. Some of the best money I've spent. |

Thanks for all the info guys. Some great info and I understand. Now the debate of going Avin vs. Dynavin. I have read lots on each. Seems to be a fair amount of people have issues with the Avin, but others love them! Dynavin seems way to go, but the price point is significantly higher. Pondering....

IMO, the Avant-4 looks more factory sitting in the dash than the Dynavin. I have no experience with the Dynavin but if you have DSP in your X5, make sure the Dynavin is compatible.

![]() I looked at the Dynavin as well and rejected it for the same reasons as OB. Of the android units that I researched the Avin really seemed to be the best, especially when you consider it ships from California, they are very responsive to questions and support inquiries and they stand by their warranty. I had an issue with the unit not reading the SD card and they replaced it no problem. |
