Under Settings, it has a green square next to "Device Drivers are installed" and "BMW Scanner Adapter is plugged in"


When I remove the cable from my laptop the second square turns yellow.


This also indicates (to my inexperienced self) that it is talking to the serial adapter, and has the correct drivers.



Is there something else I could be doing wrong?

Check your diagnostics and OBDII fuses. Check your fuse panel for appropriate fuse locations. One model uses these fuses: both Diag (5,52) and ODB II (14,51) but check yours to be sure and all fuses are good.

I had a cracked OBD2 block from it getting hooked up more than a cheerleader after a championship game, so just in case look into that too.

Sounds like it is beyond the laptop now. Could be the cable / pins as well as the car. This is the sort of thing where if you could just do a quick test on someone else's car or with someone else's cable ...
