You will be prewired inside the rear compartment. All you need is the PDC sensors and harness for the rear bumper. It has a grommet that goes through the body behind the bumper and plugs in a couple of inches from where it passes through. You will also be prewired in the front as well. Just need that harness as well.

One more thing, you will need the PDC module as well but all the 3 plugs are there and prewired. Just drop in the module and connect the harnesses.

If you are retrofitting PDC on a non PDC X5, you will need a rear speaker/gong and a console strip below your HVAC controls with a PDC button to have a LED light that will display when the system is active and to turn it on/off.

If you are doing rear only, you will need to code out the front PDC sensors.

I started my retrofit with rear only (I have front and rear now) so I can help you with everything.

There is no absolute need for the button. It can be coded so that it activates /de-activates simply by selecting reverse.

Clavurion is correct, you can get by without the button but it also provides a LED showing a blinking fault besides being able to turn it on or off. It is already coded for automatic reverse gear activation by default.

For instance, my system (front and rear) is set to activate by reverse but then deactivate by speed/distance. So if I back into a parking spot while waiting for someone and just turn off the engine from ignition position 2 to ignition position 1 to keep the radio alive, the PDC is still active and beeping from the rear. I just press the button to turn it off. Also nice to have an on/off switch to operate without having to put the car in reverse to check the system or sensors. I would get one, I think I got mine on fleaBay for $25 and that's the way our cars came from the factory with PDC. Here's one near you for £16.01
