Radio on but no sound; intermittently

Recently, the sound has been going out on my E53. It usually works when I first start up, then goes off after 5-10 minutes. Eventually, it will come back on, in 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. Looks like the radio is still working as I can see when the song changes on the display. I have NAV & DSP; 2006 3.0i.

I am guessing the amp is going and am tempted to buy another used one to get me by for now, but I don't know any way to test to make sure this is the problem.
