Getting ready to sell 4.8is

Well the time has come, almost, to say goodby to my favorite vehicle of the too many I’ve owned, and also the one I’ve owned the longest. We are moving and won’t have space for it, and the new environment is constant salt (beach) so it will suffer more than I can bear.

I will be posting an ad soon for the X5 4.8is. It doesn’t really need anything, but if I could keep it I would get the paint (top surfaces) wet sanded and re-clear coated, because of some water spot type damage (I think it was from exposure to acid rain near a power plant), refinish the wheels (when it is time for new tires), and replace the nav with Avin just for fun.

It is just shy of 170,000 miles, BSM exterior and black sport interior. Does not have the sliding cargo floor or a hitch, but otherwise pretty well equipped. Probably ask $5k unless guidance here suggests something different. I will post an ad in the classifieds with more detail and pictures as soon as I can get it out and cleaned up.

If anyone has leads on potential buyers, please send them my way - and of course I’ll send the buyer here!

I think $5K is a little shy of what your X is worth. Depending on maintenance and condition, it could bring $7K-$8K with those miles.

I appreciate that, Overboost.

It will be priced a bit low to move it quickly - if I did the three things I mentioned including new tires, I’d probably ask $12k or so. But as it is it would be a great vehicle for someone who wants to tackle those him/herself or just drive it into the ground over its remaining life.

I have all the records since new (I’m the second owner), which includes a couple of minor accidents (plastic and paint only), and of course a lot of suspension and cooling system parts. 5k oil changes, and everything as needed, nothing deferred except the noted items. But is is a driver, work vehicle, snow beast, and not pristine so priced to reflect all that.

Throw some pictures up. I would love to see what $5K would bring on a 4.8iS

I don’t what to turn this into an ad so I’ll post them to the classifieds when I post there. I’m planning to wash and photograph tomorrow afternoon so hopefully I’ll have it up tomorrow evening.

And of course I’m willing to accept more for it!

I haven’t put up the ad or pix yet because I ran into a snag and need some thoughts from the folks here.

The beast has the nav system, and I replaced the screen a couple of years ago so it is pretty sharp. But these days all it has is the Warning screen - the lower right button will not “accept” it so there is effectively no functionality available. I had this problem a while back and posted about it - the advice then was to spray some contact cleaner in the switch and hope that was sufficient. This time, apparently, it wasn’t.

So, I need suggestions. Do I spring for an Avin and burn a weekend installing it? Is there a cheaper fix, but one that is reliable (I won’t sell with band-aid fixes unless I have to, and then only with full disclosure)? I can solder, but my recollection is that switch isn’t going to be an easy component replacement (assuming I can find a replacement).

For what you were considering asking, it would be perfectly reasonable to sell it without radio/nav functionality. Direct the new owner to avin or other Android units and they can decide how they want to proceed.

Two ideas:

- I think there was a software update to the nav system which times out the Accept screen automatically. Others here may have more info on that update and whether it starts automatically when you put the update disc where the NAV map goes.

- I have the Stealthone integration for my Valentine One radar detector which shows the info on the nav screen. One feature it has is to dismiss the Accept button after a few seconds. That's why I didn't pursue option 1 myself. I don't know if Stealthones are available cheaply on eBay or elsewhere.

Thanks Crystalworks and haigha for your replies.

Crystalworks, I have trouble selling it with a major component like that sidelined. I think I’d rather fix it (if cheap) or replace it and price up, than leave a buyer wondering. Now a buyer from this board would probably get some perverse pleasure from fixing it, so that I could do that at the intended price I suppose.

Haigha, I think if the software update is out there and I can implement it (started looking in the Nav subforum), it wouldn’t solve a faulty switch. Meaning, couldn’t use that button for anything even if I get past the Warning screen automatically. I guess the same is true for the Stealthone which is an interesting idea nonetheless.

I’ll keep thinking about it; may take it out of the dash and recheck all of the cables.

You're right. That being said, I think the main menu would look better to a potential buyer than the warning screen. Also, you'd be able to tell whether the scrolling function works which would tell you whether the wheel has any connection to the rest of the system.
