Body is straight and fine. Top paint has marking, takes a sensitive finger tip to feel it, but needs at least an aggressive polish and maybe a respray of the clear (after prep).
Wheels are black (Anthracite I think) and have chipping. Need to be refinished but no point until tires are being replaced and in for paint work. Would replace center caps at that time too, just to dress it up. Found a bit of surface rust on bottom rear edge of passenger door. And as noted previously can't get past the splash screen on NAV, no pic. Going to work on an ad now...

Well used, not really tired but at that point where you either commit to refreshing or run it into the ground. It is nearly 16 years old, after all!
Unfortunately it lived outside for a bit, and was near a coal plant which likely caused the paint issue on top surfaces. Carried stuff, dog, whatever. Commuter for a time, retired to "yard duty" now. But it is what it is, and I'm not trying to sugar coat it. Powertrain is fine, usual oil consumption (1qt in 2500 miles city). I have the "silver" grills and have considered returning it to that look, including new wheels in a nicer style (to my eye). Those will be included along with the carpet mats (rubber in now) and the rear shade. I also have the BMW dog net I think.

Yep. Don't put any money into that. It's a project in need of rescue for sure. Your $5000 asking is right. Take the first $4500 that comes your way.

Its not really a money thing at this point for me, it is time. At $4500 I probably keep it and do the work to bring it back to pristine after I retire next year. Sell the M5. For a couple of thousand dollars, the X5 will give me a lot more miles and look great, too. The M5 will eat far more than that just hanging around depreciating!

But I think it will take more than a couple of grand to bring that X5 back to nice condition. Closer to $5k as you say the time is more important so I'm assuming you'll be hiring pros for the work. At any rate, I'm always for rescuing a ridden hard and put up wet BMW. I appreciate your wanting to bring its glory back.

Tires are a wear item, so ignore that cost. Paint correction and wheel refinish was quoted at $1200 a couple of years ago, so call that $1500 today. Add a bit for whatever else we discover along the way. And the NAV - call that another $1,000 for AVIN with all the bells. So $2500 plus tires ($1100), then a really good detailing and ceramic coat and we’re good to go. I can polish myself before committing to paint, but I think respray is the better option anyway (esp given the wheels and that little rust spot on the inside of the pass door). Definitely can do the AVIN myself, and interior detail.

As to bringing it back, that is the real reason to offer it here first. I’d much rather see an enthusiast who appreciates what this is bring it back and enjoy it, than just sell it to anyone who beats it to death and scraps it. These things are amazing and really outstanding vehicles in so many ways.
