Good tip. Mine has the ATF stamp as well. And the reservoir always has fluid seeping on the outside. I didn't realize it's possibly because of a failing cap seal.

Is there a cap seal you can purchase by itself? Or do you have to replace the entire reservoir?

Not there yet, but at least it will be a post on an X5 issue and NOT about Politic.

You may be able to buy the seal from FCP without having to buy the entire cap and reservoir.

Only 1 more post before I hit 7000 posts.

Did you replace your entire steering hose for the E53? I have yet to investigate the source of the leak, gets so cold early on I don't feel like crawling under and open the under panels.

Maybe next week when I can bring the truck inside the garage.

First time I dealt with this leak I thought it would be the seal, too. But the only way it would be the seal, since that reservoir isn't pressurized, is if you over filled it completely to the rim or you have been taking your X5 on some very step angles after nearly filling it to the rim.


I think Upallnight was simply stating that the type of fluid your system requires would be on the cap/reservoir label if it was original. But if there is any chance it has been replaced there is always the possibility the a PO may have purchased a reservoir and lid with the wrong label(s).
