Car rolls
2002 X5 4.4 Guys, So a few weeks ago, I was on my way to a fishing spot and at the stop light, the SUV broke down. Light turned green, I gave it gas and hard a loud pop/bang and motor revved. I had to coast to the side of the road. There's loud grinding sound when I shift into any gear. Only gear that doesn't grind is the "P" gear. The car rolls freely even in "P". So wanted to ask the collective brain bank here: 1:If the transmission went bad all of a sudden, I should still be able to put it in park and the car would not move correct? 2: Is it possible that either the front drive shaft broke from the transfer unit due to a sheared guibo plate or perhaps the drive shaft has rounded inside the transfer case? My guess is that the drive shaft is disengaged from the transfer case and therefore even in park, the car rolls. I know the guibo plat at the front half driveshaft to the transfer case had cracks in it and been meaning to get the problem fixed. However, I have recently moved and lost access to a garage or driveway and tools to work on the SUV. I have not had the chance to put the car on a jack and remove the reinforcement/structural plate to investigate. I'm hoping the forum could give me some preliminary ideas based on what I have described so far. That would help me to know where to start, I have already spent so much time and efforts into getthing the engine running reliably (all new seals and gaskets), fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, front suspension control arms, axles, bushings, etc. Much thanks for your input guys/gals. Check the front drive shaft from the TC to the front diff.

Okay. So far there are two recommendations and both are pointing at the transfer case and plus...
This means the chassis guard/reinforcement plate needs to come off in order to check. Has anyone been able to change the guibo plate at the front drive shaft and TC w/o having to drop the transfer case? I read a how-to on Pelican Parts forum and the tech made it look too easy. I couldn't get the drive shaft to slide rearward inorder to get the guibo plate out when I attempted that last year. |

Since the car rolls in park I can't imagine it's the parking Pawl (sp?) or even just the front driveshaft. This all points to the transfer case.

Agreed, if the front shaft was shot the rear shaft would still / should still keep the truck from rolling. Almost seems like the coupler / torque splitter in the tc has let go. (I want to call it the planetary for some reason but I know that isn’t correct.) (Thousands of posts to go still until 7000 🤪) Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

You have the TC that does not have the actuator motor and gear. You have a NV125 TC.
