Thanks for the offer, I did find this YouTube Tutorial on setting up BMW Scanner 1.4 on Windows. I think it's pretty good.

My problem is getting a hold of the cable. Amazon now says they have it, but they won't ship it to California. Other sources all seem problematic.

I went ahead and ordered a Carly adapter just to try it out. I absolutely HATE their business model but it is returnable (and supposedly the license fee can be refunded in the first 14 days too.). Thinking about getting the Foxwell too since that's easy to return and it would be interesting to see the comparison of what codes get read and can be addressed on both my cars (old one's got a few problems I'm trying to address). All while I wait to find a damn iSaddle cable.

I have read of people damaging modules by doing aggressive coding with Carly and that has me a bit concerned, but I plan to be very conservative.

I have a little, but I wouldn't say a lot, especially in the Windows world.

Thanks. It's not funny how many of those I've thrown away over the years, but I'll keep my eye out for one. I guess I need patience to get this set up. In the meantime I'll try other options to deal with my immediate needs.

Because using a USB to serial port adapter is hit or miss with BMW Scanner 1.4. You have access to the internet, just do a search.

Okay..right. I think the OP posted a video showing someone utilizing BMW Scanner v1.4 just find using M$win10.

I do plan on buying a BMW scanner v1.4. Just right now all the chinesium sellers I think are celebrating new year and won't be back will later in feb..?

I've never even seen a serial port (RS232) BMW Scanner offered for sale, only the USB version. Which don't require a USB-Serial adapater...



So I'm not sure what you mean in this case, UAN. (Although I agree that USB-Serial adapters can be problematic).

So...I've decided to go down ALL the rabbit holes on this one. 1) I ordered the Carly adapter during their "Valentine's Sale" ($64.90 including shipping but returnable for 14 days, plus $64 a year for the full BMW license, also refundable in first 14 days). It doesn't appear to have shipped and it's coming from Germany so who knows when I'll see it (or whether I even want it, but I'm willing to ship it back to Oregon per their instructions just to give it a try). 2) I ordered a Foxwell 510NT from Amazon, of course they have now changed their delivery promise to next Thursday, but that will let me feel less bad if I return it, and 3) I am trying to sort out a cable and computer for BMW Scanner 1.4 (sorry, but inpa and dis seem like the wrong direction for little me). I can get a 20 year old Win XP serial port laptop with a bad battery and broken screen for about $130, or a new (USB only) Asus Win 10 machine with warranty and return privileges for $189. Hard to swallow the old machine. Still looking for the cable. There are some available from guys who want $99 for a $12 cable (I'll pay $30, but have a hard time with anything more, I might as well be raped by Carly).

I'll keep the thread posted on how the different scanners do. I've got two cars to check out. Thanks for the help.
