It sounds more like dif bushings but not like internal gear slop. That said remove the rear seat and one of the fuel tank access panels and you'll be able to hear the drive train 5 to 20x as loud.

Also, especially with direct sound access above, drive in second gear maybe about 2000 RPM and use only the throttle to firmly accelerate and engine brake. You should be able to get more distinct sounds to help figure out if the diff the rest subframe or transmission are the thump.

If this is your first modern manual BMW, could be something as simple as the transmission's CDV valve. That takes some getting used when shifting if coming from other makes, and is also a very quick and easy delete. Going down this hole, could be something bigger like a worn flywheel (BMW's use a giant dual mass flywheel; when it wears, it can start "thunking" when shifting). I'm guessing at this point you're well over 100k miles, which gets you into clutch replacement territory.

Have not replaced it (or even had the driveshaft apart - yet) but I'm pretty certain that "ring" is important - it's a centering bush or seal and the factory manual has an entire page on replacing it (if damaged, I assume...).

Hang on - I just did a double take. The part number you gave cn90 (26201225981), is the FRONT centering ring, not the rear.

The rear is part number 26117526611. And costs LOTS more....

I suspect this ring (you are correct, this is for FRONT DS) is to protect
the front DS from water splash.
But this is typical German over-engineering.

I wonder if Subaru or Audi has this part.

I have replaced the rear centering ring on Red. Was a PITA. The ring had corrosion welded itself to the driveshaft and to the output shaft of the transfer case. Much swearing and a full week of time were involved. Needles to say, it went back on with a good sized portion of copper grease. Was a special order part at the dealer too. Came from Germany.

It is literally a centering ring/bush - to ensure the drive shaft is centered on the transmission output shaft. The guibo joint has too much play to be relied on to be an accurate centre.
