I was also thinking the same thing for the nitromethane. The injection pump diaphragms may become compromised. So it becomes a matter of how corrosive the mixture is, even know it is a minute amount at 1/16th per gallon.

The pump can be rebuilt, but it seems like trouble if it has to be done, say bi-annually. I believe there are also Teflon diaphragms. They could be a potential solution as well.

The new secondary pump is installed. The hoses must be taken off carefully or they will break. Three bolts secure a bracket. Two are easy to reach. A third bolt requires gymnastic bending abilities. Guess which bolt was not put back.
I'll have to wait until morning to test the replacement. The engine was warm so it did not call for it I tried to use my Foxwell 520 to activate it. The scanner has too many menus, I gave up searching for it. It's too dang hot to be outside.

You may be able to remove the right fog light and find enough room to get that last bolt in.

I dropped the hard to reach third bolt. Since I had a 10 mm socket out, I remove the lower plastic skid plate to retrieve it. The bolt was not there. The front corner has a separate open area. Since two screws are missing, pulled the panel back and found the bolt. I saved the bolt for later installation. Once I found it, I wondered if I could reach up and screw it on. My smallest ratchet will work better to reach it. Two zip ties were used to secure the panels. Next time I have time, I'll reach through fog light hole to install it.

The new pump works great. You can hear it run. It’s not as annoying as the jet sound start. The old pump impeller has a lot of play. Through the top hole, I can pull it up a bit. If you shake it, it’s all loose inside. I guess all the bearings inside are toast. I may take it apart just to see what it looks like.

I did an autopsy on mine. I never figured out how to non destructively remove the impeller but the design is interesting inside was worth taking apart.

Two non OEM pumps were returned for setting low flow alarms. I ordered an OEM HELLA 722166390 FROM RockAuto. Well, it's different but can fit. The plug is not extended though. HELLA 722166390 has the connector built into the lower motor case. Plus, mounting bolts are bolts and not studs. Should I find bolts and mount? Or return it another for a rubber stud mount unit? What size are the bolts? M8X&&???

are most German secondary air pumps semi-interchangeable?

Your thread spurred my interest in the smog pump system, which I never took much notice of, before. Mine's obviously well-used and has been there awhile (from the dirty hoses), so It must be working OK (no codes).

Looking at the part numbers visible without mirrors and such, I saw that the air cleaner and air valve were as listed elsewhere as correct for my '01 X5, but not the secondary air pump itself. I could see that it's a Pierburg PA6-GF30 (which comes up to also be a Hella 722738080), which most of the sites I saw listed it to be a VW-Audi_Lamborghini part. And just googling PA6-GF30 will bring up "boost controllers".

So. I guess if my VW part fails in the future, just about any secondary air pump will do, so I'll start with cheaper VW parts (used) and work my way up to Lambo parts. HAHA.

Ok, hopefully a third time is a charm. The first pump was returned since it set emission codes. The second one had different mounting hardware. The third is a HELLA 728124190. The most expensive one RockAuto sells. It was installed yesterday. I didn't hear any loud bearing noises. Yet, I don't know how it works when the engine is hot. I know it definitely runs on first cold start up.
