confused about wheel bolt size for 2001 E53

2001 BMW X5 E53...RealOEM.com, Bimmerworld.com both show the OEM wheel bolt size to be M14x1.5x19mm, PN#36136756298, but looking up on FCP Euro, ecstuning.com, Autozone, Dorman all say it's a M12x1.25 bolt. Short of removing a bolt to measure/compare, which size is accurate? My X5 has the std. type 57 wheels. And will I need a thin-wall socket (of which size. again) to torque down a bolt on these wheels. I have many sockets, but no thin-walls.

My 2001 has bolts with M14x1.5 threads.

The way you wrote ...x19 would literally mean 19mm bolt length, and mine are longer than that.

But you probably meant they are 19mm hex head, which is what mine are.

The bolts have a conical floating seat as you probably saw in photos.

I have the style 63 wheels and fat impact sockets fit just fine.

If you do find you need a thinner than normal socket, the answer may be to use a 19mm (or 3/4"), non-impact, that is 3/8" drive rather than 1/2" drive. The 3/8" drive will be designed to a lower torque spec, so will have a thinner wall.

Torque spec is 140 Nm.

acquiring spare parts/tools to stock in the X5; every bit helps

Thanks oldskewel, I was sorta sure, but during the past few days, too much reading of dissenting website info made me not-so-sure. I had already ordered a wheel hanger in 14mm x 1.5, and a 4-way for the cargo area, but decided to wait on the extra wheel bolts and/or locks I'd been considering.

Over the past few months, I've been re-stocking each vehicle I own with spare parts, special tools, and necessities (oil, maybe coolant, shop towels) to work on each one, if needed on the road.

What spurred me to do this was that in the last 6 months:
  • 1) the Cobalt developed braking problems, requiring new pads/rotors, and multiple attempts to bleed the system, but it's yet to be resolved,
  • 2) the GMC needed an A/C control panel+starter+plugs+wires+cap, now fixed
  • 3) the HHR Panel needed coolant refilled (and air burped, had a bubble causing overheat), and the A/C clutch wouldn't engage, despite resetting the DTCs and checking the system pressure (now fixed)

I realized that I had neglected my tools, and lent/lost most specialty tools over the last 13 years, since quitting racing, and surely hadn't the full complement of metric tools needed on everything today. So, I started acquiring more, in order to fix the aforementioned vehicles. Now, I have another to account for, the X5.

I used to have all the tools and necessary spares/fluids/compressors/generators needed by my drag-racing team, back in the day, and was willing to help anyone with their problems, even competitors. Many a tool went away, and I didn't replace them. I shifted my attention to building a camping trailer, just prior to retirement, and lost the intense car bug I once had.

OK. The new-to-me x5 has re-kindled my interest, and I'm preparing all I might need in the future, on the road. For all vehicle repairs, I've bought:
  • 1) and used the Foxwell NT510E scan-tool (bought GM & BMW programming for it, anticipating the BMW, and to bleed the ABS on the Cobalt... I haven't done it yet, going to replace the MC first), but the bi-directional NT510E did fix the unresponsive A/C clutch on the HHR,
  • 2) a complete A/C gauge set (formerly used a single gauge),
  • 3) the aforementioned power bleeder,
  • 4) metric combination and flare wrench sets I never had before,
  • 4) miscellaneous items to be able to work on all of them.

By the time I get everything well-stocked and ready for travel or repair at home, maybe this accursed heat and humidity will let me do so (in-between the constant honey-do projects I have to solve/perform for the 15-year younger wife, who doesn't yet know the toll heat/humidity takes on me).

I'm looking to purchase wheel locks, and there's two lengths.

M14x1.5x17 and M14x1.5x19
Part numbers 36136773191 and 36136773192

I'm wondering how to figure out if I need 17 or 19mm.
Seems like an incredibly negligible difference.

I replaced all my bolts with OE last year after an Indy severely over-torqued them. I think I got them from ECS and just ordered their OEM BMW offering which is M14x1.5x33. Not sure what locking bolts you are getting , but I also replaced the type offered by ECS https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...901ecs28cb~ec/

I’ve been satisfied so far. The old locking bolt heads started showing wear after a year or so of taking the wheels on and off. So far so good with the Turner locking bolts. They list as longer than the oe bolts, but they said they fit the e53, and they do fit mine.

As already mentioned - the 17mm and 19mm aren't the lengths - its the hex head size.

And given that I'm constantly swapping my impact driver from 17mm (VW) to 19mm (BMW), got a 17/19mm flip impact socket, like this: -

The bolt size on all E53 is the same. Just the hex size is 19 mm on pre 12/2005 and 17 mm on post 12/2005 models. I have the hex 17 mm from the factory and prefer that as most of the other BMW's I work with have the same 17 mm hex.

Wow never heard of a flip socket!
Thanks for the advice, my x5 is 2002 so the bolt heads are 19mm, therefore I ordered set pn 36136773191

Most of the telescopic wheel wrenches have flip 17/19 and 21/23 sockets.
