by all means blow your hurt my feelings whistle as loud as you want.

It still won't change the fact nobody likes you or your attitude.

Honestly you got me a bit confused. I figured you were some ol' codger angry at the world passing them by, now you're starting to sound like a wounded millennial.

Maybe it's just me but the grown ups I deal with don't use words like "time out" to each other. These same people wouldn't feel the need to call in a moderator to save them from the evil words on the internet.

also FYI: he, she, they, zhey don't matter either way because they all share one thing in common....Assholes, just like you

My apologies to the OP for smearing shit all over the walls and seeing as we're getting back on track I will try to refrain.

Also it seems I might be getting timed out...so if you don't hear from me again, don't cry for me Argentina

So here is where we are now. The original problem car going into limp mode and then car would not start at all with purchase of new battery, this from the prior owner. Well I unplugged the abs and bought a new battery. Both original problems fixed. Presently I am getting that huge current draw, error codes p0741 and p1870. When accelerating from stop has trouble getting out of 1st and 2nd after that fine, the battery light will flick on and off randomly while driving. Check engine light is on. I have a hunch that alternator is bad which I have thought from the beginning but could be wrong. I will test as most of you suggested by taking that B+ off. My first worry is that transmission, I am assuming and hoping it is the TCC solenoid. If I can get the transmission working I will then move on to the current draw problem. Is this the right solenoid? https://www.amazon.com/ATP-JE-8-Auto...me=2002+BMW+X5

Once again Thanks a bunch and will keep you updated as things progress. I was so down and out about this but this board has made it exciting again!!!
Apologies for cluttering your post

like Andrew & oldskewel said low voltage conditions can make these cars do all kinds of crazy things so it would be wise to rule that out before moving on to the transmission.

and quit holding out and tell us 6 cylinder or V8 already

This is some very strong education and attitude correction.

Geez I didn't think calling someone a dude, bro, man, buddy, mate etc. could be offensive.

But even my first post of this board goes to show that throttle position sensor was causing transmission errors...so I agree, transmission error would be the last thing on my list to check if you have major electrical problems. Really excited about you making a headway and can't wait to see you come back with more info on suggested diagnostics

Alright thanks guys, I will shift my focus back to the electronics even though I am stumped. I will work on it tonight and be back.

"One possibly to quickly track the fault is rather than measure current on each fuse leg; disconnect battery from both terminals and measure each fuse output to ground. Usually that won't work because of electronics but because feels like a short it would work."

I dont quite get that? How is that going to tell me anything with nothing going threw the car? Also its a V8, sorry. Thanks aging for sticking with me guys and gals

You don't need power applied to measure resistance.

If you pull a fuse you can measure resistance on the downstream side of the fuse to ground. It should be a high reading.

A 10a draw will be on the order of 12/10=1.2 Ω.

Good news the 4.4 has the same B+ terminal as the 3.0.

Remove the terminal post in the engine bay on the firewall and that will disconnect the main unfused cable.

Disconnect your battery when you aren't using the car or keep on as charger. 10a will ruin a new battery pretty quickly.

Electrics. Electronics not pulling 10a when off.

There is a set of big fuses forward of the spare tire under the trunk. Have you pulled those fuses yet?

(First disconnect the B+ to determine if that is where your short is).
