Transmission slip in manual mode second gear

Hi guys,

Towing a jet ski (or towing anything for that matter), I use manual mode to better control the gears. Only in second (from what I can tell) and pretty consistently, I get a pulsing/surging/slipping in the low revs. Trans fluid/filter/reset was done about 25,000km ago and about 125,000km before that and about 50,000km before that. I've towed plenty with it before with my track car and open trailer and no issues.

Any thoughts on what it could be or what to look for when I diagnose? It isn't going into limp mode or throwing anything on the dash. I'll plug in today or tomorrow and see if any codes are being thrown.

Thanks!

Not that the two are connected, but maybe they are. Shutting off the X5 with the door open, I get the ratcheting sound of the transfer case gear. I ordered one and should be here Monday, but could a failing transfer case actuator gear in any way cause the slipping/surging I'm getting in second gear? I suspect not, but worth seeing if any of you have some insight.

Thanks!

The actuator gear is swapped out the the slipping/surging is gone from what I can tell. Need to run it more just to be sure. In all the gear threads I browsed, this was never mentioned, so hopefully it helps someone. I'll update the main post as resolved in a couple of days once I'm sure it's good .

Good to know and I'm not surprised - there seems to be a LOT of interaction between the transmission and the transfer case (beyond the physical drive coupling!).

I had a slight shudder when accelerating hard from a stand-still and had bad 2-1 slam on my ZF 6HP26X. When I changed the transfer case fluid and ran the transfer case oil wear adaptation routine in DIS, the slight shudder was gone. And so was the 2-1 slam. WTH...?

The 2-1 slam did come back over time (like ~3 years though - not days or weeks), and so I recently changed the mechatronic sleeve, bridge seal and jump seals in the trans. After the trans adaptation reset and re-adapt routine was complete, the 2-1 slam is gone again (mostly).

Good to know LVP. Did you do the reset of adaptations on the Xfer case after gear swap? Some do, some don't... I always do. Just did our E70.

wpoll... about to do a trans service on 2 E53's (N62b44 and my N62B48) with the 2-1 slam. Tube seals, bridge seal, and mech sleeves. Going to use Valvoline Maxlife fluid. Hoping to alleviate that slam on both trucks. One has 156k and mine has 125k... fingers crossed.

I didn't, but thanks for the reminder. Debating a trans reset too to see if it changes the shifting with the new x-pipe too. But, if I'm in there, may as well - fluid is pretty fresh on both trans and transfer case.

Good luck! After I reset the trans adaptations, the 2-1 slam was the worst it's ever been and the trans shifted badly for a few kms. It adapted quickly though and after a couple of weeks the 2-1 slam got less and less until now (~2,000kms later) I almost never feel it and if I do, it's only a very subtle nudge - and only if I deliberately try and make it do (coasting to stop etc.)

I never replaced the fluid, beyond using a couple of litres of fresh ZF LG6 to replace what was lost via opening up the trans.

No complaints here running Valvoline Maxlife in my GM A5S390R for nearly a year now.
