First, and in my opinion, the easiest to check, would be the transfer case mounts. I just did this on an e46 manual we just bought and though they looked fine, they were actually sheared off at the top. Throw it on your new lift and grab a prybar and try to lift the t-case. $20 bucks and about 30 minutes later, no clunk!

That's a good tip. I will check mine. The sound seems to come from the rear and the equivalent would be the dif mounts.

That's what I'm running. No more thumping, no more worn bushings and a lifetime guarantee. If they ever do wear out I get replacements at no charge.

No. They were too expensive. The ones I replaced didn't appear to be shot, just old.
