Transfer case fluid questions and transfer case oil reset
So, I am going to flush my transfer case. I figured I'd find the correct fluid pretty easy. I normally find what I'm looking for but I'm finding multiple different answers. Some threads say throw dex vi in it, some say a 75w gl4 oil, others say some special transfer case oil. Some say it doesn't matter what fluid because it's just some chains inside that need to be bathed in lube. FCP sells the oils, but for both that say are for the x5 transfer case one is 75w type and the other is tranny fluid! ![]() Then the other thing.... will inpa clear the oil wear code once I'm done? Thanks. |

I had my local indy do mine, so I am not sure on the reset. I used this from FCP:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...409710#fitment And here is a review from FCP: Bob the builder on Tue, Aug 06 at 10:59AM Good fluid noticeably smoother Thanks FCP Euro for offering OE fluid at half the price of BMW. The dealership in town wanted like 120/quart for the stuff. I laughed at the guy on the phone. Not to hard to change with the right tools. Just be sure you have a short (1 inch) allen to shove up in there then turn it with a wrench. Be sure to re calibrate the transfer case after you change it. Unfortunately my schwaben scanner wouldn't do it so I had to install and get ISTA up and running.

Assuming you have an ATC500 TC (xDrive - LCI) then there is a proper "power divider" oil. The BMW branded product is easiest to obtain (DTF 1) but a few other brands offer a TF 0870 equivalent.
And no, INPA will not perfrom the oil wear reset and clutch recalibration - DIS, ISTA or some third-party tools will.

I use Ravenol TF-0870 in my xDrive vehicles. Around these parts it's half the price than the dealer and the only proper fluid I can find.

I'm sorted now. I've got some dtf1 tf0870 oil....Rock oil brand. Also have ista installed to reset the tc.

I've used Rock, Ravenol, and Shell all with good success. Can you tell I'm a rebel at heart and refuse to buy BMW-branded oil?
AM.

For oils I search around and I buy the least expensive decent product that is rated for what I need it for. BMW and every other car manufacturer out there just gets contracts with whoever can make their oils to spec and they slap their label on it. Then charge six times over what regular retail would be. That said I use Motul in my high revving stuff that I drive hard. Mobil 1 in every thing else. But I do find them cheap. The base exchange was selling Mobile 1 synthetic at 14 bucks a gallon a few months back. I bought six cases of the stuff. Motul I sometimes get deals on at Summit racing. The least expensive tranny fluid I find for the ZF trannies is the LiquiMoly. GM ones is Valvoline. |
