Secondary Air Pump system will not complete drive cycle
Ive been working on a 2001 X5 3.0 and having a hell of a time to get it to complete the drive cycle. I have replaced ther entire PCV system and confiermed the pump/valve is working...but, no matter how many times i try the procedure...that system still shows as "not complete". I have put close to 1000 miles on the car TWICE and its still not completing. Any tips here? The wife really wants her car back. |

Does the pump run on a cold start? What codes?

Oh my mistake. Yes the pump runs and the check valve appears to be working. There are ZERO codes.
Is there a smoke test I can do to check for vac leaks? I did a crankcase smoke test and found the PCV failures, hence that was replaced. |

What exactly is showing not complete? Have you taken to get test to get your fail? In Wisconsin a fail gets you an automatic month extension.

Secondary Air Pump system will not complete drive cycle
Quote:
See pic. It’s not failing. It says that drive cycle isn’t complete. This has been an ongoing issue…we are past the extension periods from driving it around to complete drive cycles, of which none worked. |

Secondary Air Pump system will not complete drive cycle
A "drive cycle" should have no bearing on SAP.
I don't think 01 has MAF for the sap so I'm not even sure how it checks for it working. I would unplug the SAP to force an error and see what comes of plugging it back in. It "feels like" a soft failure. Pump runs but it's not really outputting what's needed. No idea why that's not presenting as an error. Sap only runs on a cold start "drive cycle" doesn't really apply.

I was going to inspect the pump connections again so Ill do that this weekend.
This is the drive cycle guide I’ve been using, sent to me by a bmw wrench. Is this not correct? |

Sap operation is not tied to drive cycle. Most of the smog stuff is but sap runs or doesn't only on a cold start. The question to solve is why doesn't the monitor get flagged as completed immediately? It's not something that takes any time.

Oh I see what you’re saying. Right, the system itself isn’t tied to the DC…but the monitor it reports to is. So yes, we need to see why the SAP system isn’t getting the info it needs to either complete or throw a trouble code. I’ll try to unplug it and force a code. |

When/how does the test get flagged is the question.
The sap only runs under certain conditions eg ECT below a certain value. Maybe a temp sensor is incorrectly reporting so the sap system maybe runs but the conditions weren't met to require the test to complete? Find a flow chart on what makes sap run and when that fact gets tested and reported.
