If the wiper circuit reverts to an intermittent timer type function when a rain sensor failure is detected, just unplug the sensor cable in behind the rear-view mirror. At least you'll then have an intermittent wiper function - which is still useful (and what most other cars have anyway).
And use manual lighting? (I never use the Auto lights...)...
