4.8is Gas Mileage (Experiment)

With gas prices being what they are I figured I'd do a little experiment on my last trip and made this short vid. Drove from SA to Htown @ 70-75mph, no cruise.

https://youtu.be/b-pGBS40Vs0

Cliffs:
  • 20.6mpg indicated (~19mpg calculated)
  • 207.1 miles traveled
  • 70-75mph through most of the trip (some sections of surface roads to and from destination)
  • 82*F
  • Tires @ 36psi cold
  • Not flat, but not not mountainous terrain either
  • ~129,500 miles on N62b48 that needs VSS

Anyway, the N62 when driven gently isn't a terrible guzzler on the highway. My N52 powered wagon gets only a couple of MPG better.

X5chemist will become famous soon enough
What's the gearing? I would expect a little more out of it. However, I'm not familiar with BMW V8 power.

That's pretty in line with what I'm getting on the highway.

Trip from LA > El Paso, TX (or slightly before where I broke down): 19.2 mpg @ 78-79 mph average
Trip from Colorado Springs > New Orleans: 19.6 mpg @ 78-79 mph average
Trip from New Orleans > Washington DC (broke down again and had to tow it home): 18.9 mpg @ 75-76 mph average

I'll report back if I ever make a successful road trip LOL

I hypermile at 13.6, that's why the 4.6 spends most of its time in the driveway.

^Ouch. I guess the 5spd makes a big difference. Actually, wonder how much of that difference is the trans vs. the engine evolution to the N62 and Xdrive system.

You know, I have no idea. I don't pay attention to gearing in AWD vehicles. Only RWD manuals.

Yeah, you guys have it rough around the world. Gas hits $7+/gallon here (outside of California) and politicians heads might start to roll.

Looks like ~19mpg highway and 16-17 combined is the norm for these beasts then. Best tank I ever got out of it was when it was first purchased on the way back from Cali. 20.76mpg calculated and 495 miles on the tank.
