Transfer plates are free, good for 5 days, and are the way I get all my cars to the inspection station legally. Best of all you can get them online and print them in less than 5 minutes. Or you can just risk it and drive to inspection station, I've done that before, got pulled over, explained the situation, showed proof of insurance and was let go with a warning.

on the lookout for another unit..

found a local 4.8is on copart again that was wrecked. auction isnt until next month tho. if i cant come across the parts might swoop up the wrecked one and take the parts from it.

let me know if anyone is parting out a 4.8

finally made some progress. after having trouble locating a new DME / EWS / KEY combo, i contacted a "local" BMW key maker. He advised to get a used key and ignition, send him the EWS and used key, and he can cut and program a new key.

sent him the above parts and he was able to cut a key that works with my used ignition. vehicle fired right up, sputtered a little bit, but it ran without issue. scheduled an appointment for a vehicle inspection at state patrol (closest appointment is october), but that will give me a chance to get it cleaned up and a good baseline on maintenance.

planning on giving it a good detail this weekend, get it up on the lift and see what it needs. having it fire up gave me some motivation to make some progress on it.

How'd the interior clean-up turn out? Did you find any actual crack or meth? I love the blue color!

been working on getting some maintenance items taken care of while waiting for washington state patrol inspection. appointments have been pushed out multiple months.

replaced valve cover gaskets and associated o-rings (1 eccentric shaft sensor was cracked separating from circuit board)
replaced front timing gaskets
resealed vacuum pump
changed spark plugs / coil packs (looked original from 2004)
replaced alternator bracket gasket and associated o-rings
replaced engine mounts
replaced front guibo (1 bolt backed out / broken)
changed front diff / transfer case / rear diff fluid (front diff lots of metal shavings... fluid black)
replaced front axles
serviced transmission with fresh fluid, filter, mechatronic seals
replaced fuel filter
replaced control arms / bushings front and rear
fixed plugs on DSP and nav head unit

took it for a test drive and felt a slight and humming noise and felt resistance from the front end that would go away >10mph. didnt think much of it, thought maybe wheel bearings?

Drove 100 miles round trip to get the vehicle inspected and registered. on my way home coming to a stop at a light and felt a large "thud" to the front end. abs, 4x4, brake light turned on. I think the front diff is toast. transfer case disengaged the front diff, RWD drove home without issue. i havent had a chance to check it out yet. but thinking back had lots of shavings in front diff. codes are pointing to "transfer case temp high"

exterior needs a good paint correction / wax. some minor cosmetic issues that will need to be addressed.

nav screen doesnt power on, no sound from speakers. thinking about going aftermarket speakers / amp / headunit

and will need to further investigate front differential issue. it is "driveable" as is, but it would be nice to get it working the way its meant to.
