Creaking and Cracking sounds plus rim issue

Still plodding along and making the best out of an expensive game...driving a diesel

So the latest weird thing has been my car is sounding like me an it seems to be in all four corners of the suspension.

This is a fully sprung system, no air at all. Recently had new tyres fitted and a 3D AWD wheel alignment. That made it handle so much easier and lighter than before, but now we have had some rain and it has been pretty heavy, the underneath of the car is washed nice and clean.

Of course this has caused a new unpleasant development, which is creaking and cracking as I corner or drive over small bumps at slow speed. It is beyond irritating and annoying but when checked everything is said to be in good condition. Is it possible for the bushes and associated suspension arms to be so tight that they could cause this noise?

The car is very hard on the road, it makes me think that it could have heavy duty springs in it and I am not sure of what the exact ride height should be. I do know that I am 88kg and I can barely move the car if I stand on the side step and hold the roof rails.

The other part of the question is to do with my mag wheels, I have 19x9 front and rear in a pattern that does not list on the BMW wheel chart, yet they are BMW. I can find them in 18" for the X5 in the same style but not 19". Can anyone give me some info please and what is the rim load limit.?

Those wheels look to be E70 wheels, style 212. They likley have a larger centre bore than the e53 wheels and will require hub-centric spacers in order to fit your hubs correctly.

Oh, and the creaking noise could be the reinforcement plate under the engine. The six nuts and bolts holding this plate must be torqued correctly or it can move, creaking and groaning like mad.

ok this may sound hard to believe but I too was noticing a creak cracking up fron't, after the cracked manifold replaced sound has gone! does make me wonder if there would have been any flex/play in such a part but as I mention sound gone after the new cast part installed

The manifold would not creak (or not loud enough to hear). Chances are your reinforcement plate bolts wern't very tight and the mechanic removed it to do the manifold. When replaced, it was installed correctly, so the noise is gone.

Thx Wayne, Good place to start, what would the tensions be or is there a place with all the tensions that I can access as I do the odd job?

Re; The wheels, I'll look into the CBD, the E53 is 74.6mm from off the top of my head, isn't it?

No, the e53 hub bore is only 72.5 so if you are running e70 wheels you MUST use hub-centric rings. They are cheap and as they dont really carry any load (only centre the wheel) you can use plastic or alloy versions.

The place that aligned your wheels didnt pick up on the this?

Hey Wayne, yes the wheels and hub are matched up at the CBD. Something else I am having an issue with is disc rotor size on the front. I was given two sizes, but mine falles in between them. Not as small as the E53 6CYL anot as big as the E53 V8 rotors.

When I sent my VIN in for them to double check, it was the second time I was told I have an E70.

Starting to think it really is made up of left overs and new bits.

Sounds like a real parts bin special..!!

The 4.4i V8 has the same brakes as the 3.0i and 3.0d I6 cars - only the iS models had bigger brakes.

But in your case...?

Have you tried entering your VIN (last 7 digits) into RealOEM? It should then list parts specifically for YOUR car.

I can’t stress using RealOEM enough. Not sure who runs it, or why, but it really is the Easy button for us.
