When will you sell your X5?

This is the different side of the coin from "how many miles do you have" and "what have you done for your X5" but I wanted to start some discussion (maybe another one) about how long to keep an old vehicle. Mine is now 20 years old, I love to drive it and it is dependable. It has been carefully maintained and is a 9/10 mechanically as well as exterior and interior, everything works as it should. I kept a spreadsheet since new and found that I spent $46,807 on maintenance and repairs since new excluding fuel, insurance and license. I has cost $191/mo over those 245 months at $0.44/mile. It seems like these past few years at least one expensive thing needed replaced but now I have a new front suspension, half shafts, brakes and rotors, valley pan gasket, alternator, and cooling system in addition to regular fluid and tire maintenance. Every time something big happens I wonder if I should have sold it sooner and wonder if I should fix it or dump it- sometimes the repair is almost what the value is. But now that the big stuff has been done, maybe I have some years left without high cost items, and maybe I should keep it, or maybe sell it because it is at its highest value. I wonder if others have thought about this and what they have used to help with the decision besides my gut and the cost of a new vehicle? There really is no feature on a new vehicle that I crave, although better gas mileage would be nice.

Funny you started this thread because I'm in dilema and have mine for sale now but will probably pull it off the market soon.
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace...27697699529314

Getting tired of internet experts telling me how much it's worth and offering $3k while probably not having $300 in their pocket.

The only reason I just bought 2019 X3 M40i was almost a curiosity to experience the B58 and it doesn't dissapoint. Plus my 13 year old loves the CarPlay, lol.
But, in many aspects, E53 X5 is simply better SUV (minus power and mpg) and even though I use to own 4.6is, I find 3.0 enough for everyday use.
So yeah, I think I'll be keeping mine for some future now.

Beautiful example.

I won't sell mine until someone offers me $30k plus for it. So, maybe another 15 years?

I've done so much work myself on my X5, I know it inside out, it's rock solid and therefore it stays with me. I'd love to see it hit 1,000,000 miles.

When I can replace it with a similarly capable vehicle. 6MT, equivalent towing capacity, similar interior capacity, not meaningfully externally larger.

Unfortunately, I don't think that that will ever exist again. Certainly, today's X5 doesn't fit well in my garage. (I can comfortably park 4 cars diagonally and one in the drive aisle if there aren't any that are too large. The E53 is on the outer edge of what can be diagonally parked.)

2 great points, the X5 may actually increase in value with time?? It may be a long time though, not sure my lifespan is long enough. And I can fit 4 cars in my garage too, with the X5 and another car in one of the bays, a new X5 would not fit, but an X3 might…

Carbob, I recognize that you are a cut above most BMW owners in terms of spending the money to keep it running. And for that I appreciate you.

But when you said $46,807 on maintenance over these twenty years, or 44 cents/mile, THAT IS INSANE. Is driving the X5 every day worth the price of a new 4Runner, which you could drive and it would cost you probably closer to 2 cents/mile to drive?

(I actually bought a new Toyota a while back and drove it for 140k miles, and averaged 1.8 cents per mile over the cost of ownership -- most of which was just on tires!)

The only logical conclusion is that Carbob hates money. I rest my case.

Eh. Any value increase probably won't cover the cost of ownership. X5s aren't going to spike like, say, my E30 M3. (I paid more for the E53 in 2021 than I paid for the E30 M3 in 2008, to give some sense of the value spike there.)
