E53 V8 Engine compatibility

Hello brains trust!

I'll start by saying I'm aware this may be crazy and silly costly but I can't put into words how sentimentally attached to my 4.8is X5 I am. I'm fairly confident that today the motor has given up on it. I've checked around the breakers and can't find a replacement from an X5 specifically the N62B48 nor the 750 E65 which I think was the exact same engine code.

What I can find are some N62's from the 550 E60 (N62B48B) and the 650 E64, which I believe is the same engine code and the N62Tu from the E70.

I am wondering whether anyone has any information on whether these other variants of N62B48 are able to be installed into the E53, I'm guessing it would be too much work with engine space, motor mounts, transmission mating not to mention the ECU issues.

I guess my question is - Without having a direct replacement of the same engine code is it likely I'll be able to keep my much loved E53?

After doing the seals and water pipe on my '04 4.8is and (for some stupid reason) deciding to buy an '04 4.4 that now needs seals (@ 55k mliles), I am resolved. At 180k miles, the next $5k repair job will be replaced by an LS1. Screw Xdrive. A blown LS motor in an E53 simply will be the solution Cubans have whittled together for years since they couldn't get Detroit parts.

And all of that is only until the electric retrofit market takes off. I would sh!t myself daily if I had 400ft/lbs of twist and sub 4 second 0-60 times. There's an (unfortunately) very quiet motor out there that will make this happen.

Also.. bit of perspective: My 4.8is dash is lit up like an ABS tri-fecta Christmas tree. It's not personal. But man.. what if it could plant over 600ft/lbs of tq at like 1100RPM? Feels like that's the kind of thing we should look into. Gas wars be damned.

E53 V8 Engine compatibility

You can transplant from 7 series. There are a handful of modifications like mounting holes for power steering or such but somebody did it and posted all the steps I think on xoutpost.

I'm not sure if it was old enough to be m62 or if was n62 I'm also only 95% sure that it was 7 > X not X > 7.

N62 engine differences between X5 and 750i
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink/top...ink_source=app

N62 but I suspect similar differences.

The biggest problem is the oil pump chain is a different length and behind the timing chain so it's a lot of work to redo the timing just to swap the chain.

I'd have figured out a way to resize the chain. Easy enough to remove a pin just need to figure out how to reinstall a new pin and crimp so it's good as factory

Too bad I can't get a tri-wall to use as I can get my hands on 2, maybe 3 4.8is engines from lot at the police impound mostly rollover or abandoned X5's.

Don't know the cost for "scrap" import but it was 1800 USD to ship the Challenger to the UK about 4 years ago containerized....

The oil pump chain thing frustrated me when I was considering rebuilding my 4.4, versus buying a refreshed 540 motor that I would then convert to AWD with the parts from my 4.4. I found aftermarket oil pump chains with removable links for several other BMW motors, but not the M62 series. Seemed like a poor investment of time and money to have to redo the timing on a fresh motor. I also wasn’t quite sure of my understanding of, ability to do a full rebuild on my 4.4 in a reasonable amount of time and have a reliable motor at the end of it.

Thanks for the info all! Andrew you’re always the guy with the goods!

Can I just check my understanding is right here though, that thread refers to swapping a 750 into an E70 - wasn’t the engine on the e70 the N62TU? From what I can understand so far the E53 X5 4.8is and the 750 E65 both use the same engine code N62B48 - would there still be these differences between the two same coded engines?

The video link I believe it's for the m62tu. The xo thread is for n62 but I think the differences are very similar.

E53 V8 Engine compatibility

I was going to say "the same difference" where it'd be grammatically correct as opposed to the very incorrect common misuse when somebody means "the same thing".
