There is plenty of online tutorials about M57 thermostat renewal.
Original main thermostat. https://www.hubauer-shop.de/en/therm...517805811.html EGR thermostat (if you have one, EU4 version). https://www.hubauer-shop.de/en/therm...717787870.html O-ring for EGR thermostat. https://www.hubauer-shop.de/en/o-ring-11532248435.html

As Clavurion said, there's plenty of online information on this job - inc. some YouTube tutorials.
It was one of the first tasks I tackled when I got my 3.0d, since the engine was not getting up to the proper operating temperature. You only need to drain the coolant, remove the air intake assembly and tube and the turbo intake pipe to get access to the main thermostat. ![]() ![]() ![]() You'll only need basic tools plus a e-torx socket set. When re-filling the coolant system, ensure you bleed the coolant system correcty, to avoid getting air trapped in there.

If it's EU4 with EGR cooler it blocks access to thermostat so I've always removed the whole EGR cooler.
Removing viscous fan with fan housing gives you more room. My viscous fan is permanently installed on the warehouse shelf as there is no need for it in Finnish weather even when towing on hot summer day. E53 has a huge radiator originally designed for the petrol variants with a lot more excess heat.

EU3 certainly makes it simpler!
![]() But looking at my photos above again, I've just realized I also removed the EGR pipework - gave me more clearance for accessing the thermostat. I was thinking of leaving off my viscous fan assembly when the coupling failed, as our mean temps here are pretty low too. In the end, I sourced an OEM coupling at a great price so I replaced it.

This is basic stuff and any workshop should be able to do this. Just get the parts yourself. For coolant G48 type.
