Wait. Can you do that again for those of us in the cheap seats? I'm still confused.

OP asked what "mystery" connect was for.

Folk here have confirmed it is the connector for the servotronic steering.

This was an option in some years but might have been standard on the 4.8is?

I believe this is true. I will go look in our 4.8is and see if there is a diffference on the '04 4.4.

What is “Servotronic” steering vs normal-ass power steering?

Servotronic over-assists the power steering in low speed situations. I believe it might also stiffen it up at higher speeds? After it was introduced BMW's were dubbed, "the ultimate parking machine."

It's a cool thing to have, but it's nothing amazing. Some hate it.

Instead of fixed assistance power a solenoid valve controls the assistance pressure according to vehicle speed. So compared to fixed it is lighter on low speed to make steering easier and stiffer on high speed to give better road feel.

All the above is true. I have an 05 that's equipped with the feature. It's a total relief.
And I have one without.
That X3 can be somewhat annoying to me but over time you build up your shoulder and arm muscles. I once almost got into a crash last summer and had to maneuver at sudden high speeds. The normal feature stiffened up and did not let me oversteer, something I would normally do considering the surprise. Very thankful right there.
Both cars are over 15 yrs old.
