Good. Glad it was mentioned before me.

Thanks for those links (I didn't think anyone used torrents anymore I use newgroups USENET).

Cheers

since I'm more-or-less computer illiterate, I don't know much about torrents

I think I used https://www.qbittorrent.org/ for the either the ISTA (or maybe it was for the INPA download, or for items I needed for the work-arounds...I'm old, and can't remember the details ); it was super slow, and took several hours (first attempt got botched somehow, so I tried it again overnight, while I slept). "newgroups USENET" is a complete mystery to me, so I'll probably stay stuck in the past, computer-wise.

Well they've been around since the conception of the internet so I doubt you're
stuck in the past

Quote:
Usenet (/ˈjuːznɛt/), USENET,[1] or "in full", User's Network,[1] is a worldwide distributed discussion system available on computers. It was developed from the general-purpose Unix-to-Unix Copy (UUCP) dial-up network architecture. Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis conceived the idea in 1979, and it was established in 1980.[2] Users read and post messages (called articles or posts, and collectively termed news) to one or more topic categories, known as newsgroups. Usenet resembles a bulletin board system (BBS) in many respects and is the precursor to the Internet forums that have become widely used. Discussions are threaded, as with web forums and BBSes, though posts are stored on the server sequentially.[3][4]

The 510 and 520 communicate with all the modules in the e53 where the 530 has some that it can't read/reply to....

For BMWs, nothing beats having INPA / ISTA / NCSExpert / Tool32 / WinKFP.

The Foxwell and such are handy tools to have, but not nearly as capable.

Fun fact: You can run these in a VM on an Apple Silicon Mac. I just coded in a new steering angle sensor on a friend's E46, for example.

Agreed.

I also did that too on my steering angle sensor. I had to buy a new one and needed the vin coded.

I had inpa working great on my windows 10 pro laptop, until I needed it again and it can’t “communicate” with the X5 now. I’m hoping I don’t have to uninstall/reinstall, but it may come to that.

Yeah, ISTA is the way to go for these cars, when it works. But it's not really something you use every single day. My experience has been every time I dig it up every 6 months or so and go to use it, I either can't get it to start, or more commonly I can't get it to connect to the car.

So spend an hour or so fiddling with network settings and whatever and maybe I can get it to connect. But usually this ends with erasing the whole operating system and reinstalling everything. And then it usually works a couple times. Lately it's been good I think.

There was an effort to package everything in a nice virtual machine but I don't know how that really ended up. It's hard to maintain something like that and keep it updated. It would be great at first though. The dockerfile would be good but this is all windows stuff. I think it's too sophisticated to use wine, it's a c sharp app so probably wouldn't work.

I finally got the cable for this car and a brand new battery, I'm going to put it on the maintainer later and we'll see how much red stuff is there. Well I'll probably just clear everything in horror and then check again in a few weeks and see what comes back.

I have it running well in a VM on UTM. Even with x86 emulation on ARM it's running well for me.

As a bonus, I can just copy the VM from machine to machine and it starts right up (I've now run it on 4 or 5 different Macs). The only mistake that I made is that there's enough personal stuff in this Windows install that I wouldn't be willing to just copy it to a friend's machine.
