Engine pr0n: M[emoji29][emoji292] teardown

Tension is on the slack side of the chain so it doesn’t change timing.

Any “springy” is just to hold position until oil pressure builds.

Of the three m sixty two I helped rebuild the tensioner were all shot and almost certainly the root cause of failure.

Good info to know. I'm going to swap mine out at the next oil change. It's 500 miles from its next service.

In my case, if I rebuilt my M54 for endurance, retaining all of it’s current attributes, I would only then feel comfortable rippin’ ALL of the time! Re-enforcing the gearbox, as well as the transfer case would result a solid high performance M54 E53 build.

But at what cost. All of the above does not sound cheap! But everything is currently there, and ready to go.

I put the s54 hydraulic chain tensioner in mine:

Nice upgrade

I watch this guy to fall asleep sometimes. The b58 Gen 1 teardown video was very useful. I have an extra vanos spline socket tool I was going to mail him actually.

The m54 is doing pretty good now that it's warmer. The fuel trim / lean codes have been gone for almost two weeks without changing anything. I might be able to pass emissions testing. I still think something is wrong. I keep smoke testing it, nothing.

Every time I drive it I just want to get the supercharger going it really needs it.

Happy is your e53 an auto? If so how do you find it holds up to the supercharger? Do you have any vids of you "Rippin" in it? Just wondering what's possible with my 03 M54.

SB Mowing for me. LoL..

Definitely make sure all of the bugs are worked out before blower install. But yes, the M54 variant E53 definitely needs a boost! LoL..

No, not an auto. 5 speed.

I do have a vid, but it was captured years ago. At the time the X wasn’t fully up to par. DISA, MAF, etc. all the usual suspects. LoL.. (Tune-ups are like a regular occurrence for these tanks it seems). And it was prior to converting my fuel supply from gasoline to E85, as well as the addition of some very legit headers. The current form is actually a bit intimidating!
