Rear CV joint grease becoming "liquid" instead of grease.
I posted the DIY in the E39 5-series forum. Take this opportunity to service the rear driveshaft too (new BMW CSB, Giubo, and centering bushing).

Here is the DIY. No need to remove the exhaust system (I learned it the hard way). Just loosen it enough to drop it a few inches.

That damn exhaust on my 4.8is is much heavier than I expected the 1st time I removed it. I almost got dain bramage!
