Metallic clank

I have a rather pronounced metallic clang when I go from drive to reverse or vise versa. I'm thinking it may be the uj at the back of the driveshaft. Is this a common failure? Of course I could be wrong..

You can twist the drive shaft by hand to determine where the play is that causes this. Some amount is perfectly normal.

It should be more of a "tink" than "clunk".

When i had my rear seat removed and the gas tank access open it was crazy obvious. Often j hear people determine is the rear diff mounts

Transfer case gear or the guibo cracked/loose bolts.

Have somebody change gears for you while you watch. There's play in the system and maybe ⅛ of a turn on the drive shaft is normal.

I never noticed the "tink" on mine until i had the gas access open but it was very evident from under the car.

You should only get one "tink" per gear reversal.

If you get repeating "tick tick tick" it's usually lose giubo bolts. (that sound is not so metallic no "ring" to it).

Sharp metallic cling when changing D-R-D is the first sign of worn out or dry CV joint. Like said have someone changing the gears and hear for yourself from beneath where the sound originates.

Metallic clank

Actually, that would make it more likely, but it would tick very regularly when going very slow

I had this exact problem for years. Sounded like I was hitting a metal driver whenever I selected D or R. Over the course of several bigger driveline jobs, and after was all said and done I replaced the guibos with all new fasteners, the center bearing, the driveshaft CV joint, the rear differential, split and retorqued the driveshaft halves and installed new front driveshaft splines. None of this helped as I couldn’t get rid of the “ping”.

Only after installing the transfer case I fully rebuilt (including a new front output shaft) did the “ping” go away. Except very, very occasionally when I selected reverse now. And it’s much more faint.

Beyond a general idea that there was too much lash in the drivetrain, likely somewhere in the TCase or spines, I’m stumped as to what exactly caused it for so many years.

Well I put new front driveshafts on the other week and like I said the guibos are done too.
It's either the trans box chain a bit slack or the uj at the back of the main driveshaft. Probably the latter as that's more of a direct connection to the hollow shaft.
