M54 to M57 swap E53 X5

Hi all,

As I'm sure many of you know. No m57 e53s were sold in north America. Unless someone shipped one overseas back to North America we don't have them available used for purchase here.

Has anybody taken on the project of swapping an m57 into an e53 (m54 or the like). Particularly the e70 diesels are starting to become available for relatively cheap especially if they were involved in an accident and being parted out. How difficult do you think it would be to swap the drive train and associated electronic control bits into an e53?

M57 or M57N like it was available from the factory would be a lot simpler than using E70 M57N2 as a donor because the vehicles are so different regarding bus communication etc.

Yes it seems it would be simpler to take one from an e53 chassis but none available in north America so with the cost of parts from overseas it would probably be more worthwhile to just ship an entire e53 with a 3.0d which at that point no swap required. You could probably stand alone ecu with the m57 from the e70 and figure something out to make it talk with the gauge cluster from the e53.
