Rear upper hatch switch button not working - tips?
Release button on hatch between license plate lights stopped working yesterday. Hatch open button under the AC panel and on the remote key work fine. Does this point to the hatch switch itself? Or are there any other things to check? I should mention that prior to this the rubber portion of the trunk switch has deteriorated and split where it flexes. I saw the 2 micrswitch buttons under the pad in good visual condition and pressed on them to verify they were working, before I put the rubber pad back on with double sided tape for a temporary repair. I found the Land Rover part that replaces the rubber boot and was about to order it but I think maybe the switch decided not to wait lol.

Yes, seems like a pblm with the rear hatch switch.
The whole assembly - switch and trim assembly comes out and can be repalced. Part# 51137170840 But pull it out and see if you can see a problem with the switch

Thanks for the advice and part number!
I think it's messing with me, it just started working again lol. I really dislike the design of this. A simple broken switch needs so many unrelated parts to be replaced, plus painting!

On my '06 X5 3.0 (since sold)...I replaced the entire "grip" with an aftermarket part and their was no painting. Mine had an outer chrome-colored plastic trim that I just transferred from old to new...Early models may be different.
But worth pulling it apart...maybe you can just fix /replace the switch...Maybe there is some corrosion in there with the rubber piece missing?

Cool to know! I need to look deeper into this.
Was the part you replaced just the black plastic bottom of the handle that holds the switch and plate lights? I looked up the part you linked and it seems it's that plus the upper portion of the handle primed and ready to paint? One of these days I'll check the switch and wiring too.

Maybe cracked wires in the wiring loom...

I had the rubber erode away and bought the unpainted trim. Also I think x5chemist recently fixed his button too. He might have some insights

I found this one - Chinese made - on Ebay. I bought one like this. It worked fine. There seemed to be many more cheap, aftermarket options when I bought mine a few years ago (Tarrifs?)
Anyway, mine was black plastic and it accepted the thin chome-colored plastic trim piece that was placed over this part. The trim piece covered the en tire length of the grip https://ebay.us/m/vt21QQ

Quote:
The Ebay part you linked is just the bottom part, doesnt come with the upper trim like the OE part ![]() How is the Ebay part installed? I thought the painted upper trim piece was bonded to the unpainted bottom switch/plate light panel? How did you separate your existing painted upper trim from your old part and put it on to your new unpainted switch/plate light panel? Thanks, will definitely check for that too! Quote:
By unpainted trim, just the bottom part with the license plate lights and switch? Is it unscrew, switch plugs, screw back on? I think I read it's bonded with double tape to the top painted trim?

The paint matched exterior trim came to me as black primer. It was the whole button assembly in a new trim piece to be painted to the color of the car.
I think I still have my old one lying around. If so I can see what came about of wanting to separate it. I can’t remember why i didn’t go through with it. It could’ve been half brittle plastic. half laziness |
