Blank Nav Screen
I did a very qick search but didn't find any info. My Nav screen went blank this morning ie. the background lighting or whatever went out. Checked the fuse, it's fine. Suggestions, comments, repair costs? Any help appreciated. 2001 X5 with the Nav screen Thanks ATCX5 |

There's more than one fuse associated with the nav system, so be sure to check the fuse bank in both the right rear compartment as well as the one in the glove box.
Replacement costs vary, depending on whether you have the 4:3 small screen or the 16:9 wide screen (the 2001's came with both, as the wide screen was a mid-year change).

Checked all fuses, they're fine, radio works as does the CD player, Nav system has power. Just the screen is totally blank. Do these have some type of bulb system...obviously I'm clueless. Just trying to avoid getting raped by the dealer.
Thanks for any help ATCX5 |

Your screen is the 4:3, which I used to have in my X5. Let me ask you some more questions about your deal...does it even flicker or is it just blank? It was butt cold this morning- do you park your X outside overnight? Have you recently done any kind of software upgrades or been doing anything in the rear compartment where the drive is located? I've noticed that on really cold mornings either screen would take a while to "warm up", and the display on the 4:3 would be REALLY dim. If your fuses are fine, I'm hoping that your harness somehow came loose back there, so if you make sure the maroon and the blue harness are seated in there real firm, we can cross another thing off the list of possibilities. I did see in the realoem online catalog that you can buy the 4:3 display as a seperate part, but it appears to be discontinued and may be hard to come by. In any case, it might suit you to think about getting the 16:9 display, man. It'll add to the resale value and make you a whole lot happier while you have that X. You can get them on ebay for as low as $700, but most go for $900 +. Let me know if you need a hand with it.You don't live that far away from me and the future mrs. always likes an excuse to hit the outlets out your way. JV BTW...you gonna be able to make the meet on 5/13?

Thanks for the info and patience JV. Been outta town, couldn't get on line. The X5 does sit outside...last Thursday I noticed the screen start to pulsate/flicker a little. Later that night it quit completly but then came back on, readable but kinda dim. The next morning it took a complete dump and hasn't come back.
The only thing I've done recently was to pull the battery and have it charged. The car sat during the last snow and the battery was dead. But that was well over a week before the screen failed. Anyhow, I'll check the harness and keep hoping. Thanks, ATCX5 |
