Does the '01 X5 have X-drive? If not, how does the AWD work?

I'm confused on whether or not the '01 X5 has X-drive. I know it has all-wheel-drive, but I don't know about X-drive. Please clarify. Thanks

Non-Xdrive have a fixed power split of 62% out back and 38% up front. Xdrive have variable on-the-fly distribution anywhere from 0%-100% or 100%-0% to either axle.

As DKL stated, you have a fixed power split.

DSC then brakes the wheels that are out of line, until they regain traction.

I think though that if DSC brakes a wheel, doesn't it give the other wheel on the same axle more power? So if it brakes the right wheel, the left one gets more power? Maybe X5's don't have rear differentials... hmmm

It's the same Xdrive system in both X3 and X5...thus, you can have 100% power deliver to any single wheel.

Does the DSC system deliver 100% power to any single wheel in Xs without xDrive?

No...

Only 4WD systems can do that. xDrive isn't as high-tech as you think I'm afraid.

It can only transfer power between the front and rear axle.

But not left to right wheel per axle. Audi's quattro does this however. BMW is still behind on this one.

DSC deals with braking, so it wouldn't be the one sending power anyway. DSC can break each wheel at individual amounts to prevent and/or stop slippage.

Uh uh. The current version of X-Drive was introduced in 2003 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It's been essentially unchanged since then.
