it is just plug and play, you'll just need to get the cluster recoded at the dealership

Not many dealers will recode a used cluster. I would check with a few before making a purchase.
Lack of recoding will result in a mileage tamper warning light in the dash. Also note that you will not have functioning oil temp lights that are a part of the 4.6is/4.8is cluster.

Wait a minute...isn't the redline about 1000 rpm HIGHER on the 4.6/4.8 than on the 4.4? I personally would not be diggin that.
My 4.4 redlines just about 5800rpm, looks like the 4.6 at least goes nearly to 7000rpm. http://www.margraves.net/toys/x5/xpi..._windowsup.wmv
