X5 wiring for a beginner - help please !!

Hi I am new to this site and to my recently purchased 4.4i sport - excellent vehicle - prefer it to my SL500!
I have a very simple query - I want to hard wire a Gps/radar detector into the car and I need to pick up a SWITCHED (via ignition) 12V supply from the wiring in the front console/nav display/centre console area. What colour wire should I be looking for and is there a good/obvious place to tap into ???
Thanks
John

If I remember correctly, the 12v power socket in the passenger footwell is switched.

That's right, I was going to wire my XM to the socket but ended up using the flashlight. Thanks for clearing that up. I've been "preoccupied" this morning.

Why not hard wire it up high at the top of with windshield? Mine is hard wired to next to the upper dome light where there is a 12v switched on the UGDO. It works better there and is out of sight. Plus the wire is much easier to conceal.

Here is a detailed link. Mine uses the suction cups at the top of the window so I can still use the visor.

sounds like the best option and away from prying eyes of vandals etc.
You have pics of this setup? be interesting to see. Thanks

See the above link, but be sure to use a volt meter to sort out the power wire issue. Mine was a different color than expected in my 01 but I can't remember off hand what color it ended up being. Also...Mount it just below the tinted strip so you get the best range. Mine works flawlessly and nobody notices it up there not even the police.
