DINANM3: Out of curiosity, was the two truck and driver from your local AAA? I have never called BMW Roadside Assistance despite having needed two jump starts as my battery was dying when I called AAA. BMW Roadside Assistance now uses AAA in most areas.

My tyre blew up on me a couple of months ago, and i called up the road side assist. It took 2 hours for them to get to me, and wen they finally got there they said they had to call a tow truck to tow my car because firstly the spare was 17inch and it was a policy to not change tire on freeways..... I mean WTF.... then i told him to go and started to change it my self. But the guy was quite nice he stopped and said f--k the policy,he wassnt gonna let my hands get dirty.....haha..nice chap.... but seeing the spare vs. my big 20's side by side the spare was quite a sight....

I could understand not changing tires on the freeway but they gave you the same crap about having a smaller than 20inch spare. unbelievable. Does this really cause a problem ar is there a hidden agenda here. What is going on. If x5s really cant take different size spares. Than x5s with 18s should have a spare 18 an x5 with 19s should have a spare 19 and so on. WTF.

the 4.8 has 14" rotors up front. Won't clear the 17" donut. But since you have a 4.4, that should matter whatsoever.

Before making a decision about this it might be better to gather all the information about weather it is proper to drive your X with 3 20's and one 17 inch wheel. Maybe there is something you dont know about. I can see running a 17 inch wheel with 3 18's but 3 20's i believe i would be finding out if it's safe to do that. Just MHO.

All of the X5 wheels and tires from 17inch to 20 inch all have exreme close if not identical overall hieghts and rolling diameters. that is all that matters.

This goes along the same lines as the dealer telling you that your 20" Style 87 would screw up your X5. According to BMWUSA.COM, 20" Style 87's are a dealer installed option on the 2006 X5 4.4i. I guess nobody who works for BMW understands what fits an X5.

So then i told him dont worry its fine and that the 4.8 has 20s stock and come with the same spare i do. So he calls up BMW roadside asks them what to do and they tell him to not change my tire because it will not match and will mess up my differential and DSC since it has X drive. He said the only thing we will do is tow it to the dealer. So i told him and BMW which was on the phone with him. To F#$K off and i changed it myself. Has anyone ever heard of this crap yet. I thinbk this is rediculous. WTF.

I'd believe it. Roadside assistance is great but they stick to the book big time. When I had my X crap all over itself and it needed to be moved 3 feet for a tow truck to get to it, the RA guy insisted on using all tow hooks. I told him, look I don't care just move the thing, and he said if he didn't follow the book it was his @ss. Now I know you should use the tow hooks but I was amazed and how strict he was about it.

I am surprised that BMW road side assist acted this way. They are usually professional and try to take care of people. I would rather have my truck towed on a flat bed instead of taking a risk w/ a smaller tire. I now have 20's on my truck and hope it does not happen to me.
Better luck next time and I hope it does not happen to you again.
