Another problem!
They take a look for 30 minutes and tell me "Its fixed itself"....mmmmmm.....so I take the car away and it does it again. I switch it off and on again and it goes away......have booked the car in again with them but has anyone had this happen to them....I refuse to believe this car self fixes. It self breaks for sure!! I am concerned this will happen in the fast lane of the motorway.....BMW response to that was "well, you have out BMW Roadside Assist who can come out to help".....great, makes me feel real good about taking my family out in it!! What is it with BMW? I asked the guys to help me fix our old babyseat in the car (fitted in my Audi) and they couldnt be bothered and told me to buy the BMW Isofix seat at £260. So I went to our local baby superstore, this really helpful guy sells me a grip mat, fits the seat and its rock solid....I know they arent babyseat fitting experts but their attittude SUCKS!!! Rant over. |

This happened when my X5 had 3000 miles on it had to go in the first time re programed the gearbox software which was ok for 300 miles then did it again this time replaced a electronic box which conrols the gearbox! The reason the car goes into fail safe mode is to protect the car as it thinks it has a fault,But if you leave it 30 mins the problem would go away. What was wrong with mine was that the X5 belived it gearboxs was over heating.

Mine did the same thing when the alternator was broken and the battery was short on juice.
But when the alternator was replaced it "self fixed" its self. Took a few seconds and all lights went off inc. the Engine failsafe message. Do you have a bad battery maybe?

This car has a mind of its own.....so all the warning lights keep coming on (including the engine warning light) then, you turn the car off and back on and they all go off. Then, after driving a bit they all come back on again......its going back to BMW on Monday but I have now made a formal complaint and a PUMA log will be started which is the process they have to go through in the UK where there is a complaint like this......they will first try to fix it and then, it its recurrent, they may ultimately buy the car back.....but not at the original purchase price! Apparently they take into account the time you have had it and the mileage put on.
So far the problems have been: 1. Failed central locking 2. Failed electric windows 3. Bad condensation in both headlights (on third set now). 4. Latest DCS Inactive, warning lights lit up like a Christmas tree. Do I have a lemon? Its a 2002 3.0i. Am convinced that as soon as the warranty expires this car is gonna go wrong big time.

My trans has gone into failsafe mode. I was pulling my large enclosed motorcycle trailer, and when on the Hwy entrance ramp, it came on. I stopped and turned it off for 2 minutes, started it up and haven't had a problem since. This was approx. 2000 miles ago. Your problem seems worse. Maybe find a competent dealer. Good luck.

Mmm, could be the transmission as the gear change is really jerky when the lights are on.....even now with all the lights off the car feels down on power and just not "right".

Car goes back in today and I get a call to say that they have ordered a new engine control valve which came up as faulty but they dont know whether that will fix the problem......sound familiar to anyone. Anyone know how serious a failed engine control valve is? This car has only done 35,000 miles in 4 years!
