$540 for the 3.0 chip Does anybody think this is worth it? I was alos looking at the afe intake for $260 shipped. Whats the best bang for the buck?

Get a Conforti Shark Injector. It's cheaper (around $350 shipped), dyno proven, and many people have had great experiences with it in the E46. It increases HP, TQ, redline, and removes the govener.

Whats it like? Did you do it yourself?

I heard that they could not change the transmission software on the rev setting changes etc, is that true?

Thats unlike the superchip, Isn't it?

In addition to the V8's it also does not work on the 3.0i engine after 2003, they only show compatibility up to 2003.

Be interested to know how you got on with it on your X.

For X5 V8's produced 'til 2003 (NON-Valvetronic), Yes you can do a self install. They basically send you a serial cable kit with OBDII interface and you load the program with a software you install on your laptop.

Here's the exact text from their website:

Your BMW X5 4.4i V8 E53 utilizes the latest technology ECU that can be re-programmed through the on-board diagnostic port (OBD-II). Specialized software interfaces with your vehicle’s engine management system to extract the electronic code via serial download. Once the information has been extracted, Powerchip technicians apply the performance changes and upload the performance program back into the vehicle through the OBD-II port. Installation can be completed by most clients with minimal experience required. Alternatively, for an additional charge, installation can be arranged at one of our many installation facilities around the country. The installation of the software takes approximately one hour, and the vehicle does not need to be off the road for any significant length of time, which means you can upgrade your own car - in your own time!

In standard form, the X5 4.4i V8 E53 produces 290 hp and 324 lb.-ft.

Powerchip has a range of chips to suit your car, which can increase it's power to between 304 hp and 307 hp, and it's torque to between 336 lb.-ft and 343 lb.-ft.

For Valvetronic engines they would need to have the ECU for them to flash and program the chip.

They told me a long time ago that they could also send the cable and software for valvetronic owners but perhaps this has changed. You may want to talk with them directly about this option...

I have the PC on my M5 adapted for intake, exhaust, headers and race cats. The driveability has significantly improved ie better throttle tip in, mid range punch.. basically a smoother power curve.. I would say it's worth it if you have mods already.. if not, not really...
