Unfortunately, it's a very common problem - even if the windows are not frequently used. In fact, my drivers side front window that gets the most use was one of the last of mine to fail.

Thanks for the info, everyone! My husband said it took less than 10 minutes to change out the regulator once he got the door panel off. Next time (if there is a next time), maybe he'll try the zip ties!

You have me curious? I think you mean zip ties right? My first window regulator seems to have started to act up. Window wouldn't go up had to help it by pulling window up withone hand and using the switch with the other. I haven't touched the window since, but started reading how to repair the dreaded regular. This is the first time I've seen anyone mention plastic ties...that would be great since I live in Moscow and it takes 3-4weeks to get anything from the US shipped to me. Thx

The rear doors were much easier to do than the fronts.... I've done all 4. Oh the fun those silly regulators provide. Let's see... that's a total of 4 on a 2000 GTI (which has two doors remember) and 4 on the ol X5. I say F U window regulators
 Can't quite picture how the zipties would work... not that it matters any more since I don't have the X5.

You should run all the windows down at least one a week, keeps the cable from getting stuck perminently in one shape. First time I hit my rear windows they both dropped. Fronts are both perfect, but I use them all the time.

 - typical - I, too, try to remember to roll the rear windows down every nice day - All this would be mute, if they made a 2dr X5 - throw in a rollbar, 4pt seat belts, extinquisher, and I'm ready for the 150mph club at Bonneville  - without the rollbar, you are limited to the 130mph club
