I doubt it is the Dinan software programming besides, the tranny appears to be mechanically sound, but the only way I can do that is to get to a local Dinan dealer to remove it.

Thanks for the thought....it does sound more electrical in nature.....

Speaking of electronic, I'll make sure that we check the P-N safety switch to make sure that it is not faulty.....a few months ago, I did have trouble getting the shift level into "D". I could go from "P" to "R" and "N", but it would not go down to "D" until I wiggled the level to the right a little bit and it let me into "D". It did this a few times and then it never happened again.

I know back in 2001, the 4.4i had a recall on your P-N safety switch going bad and then it would put the tranny in fail safe mode.....hmmmm.....

Okay, no one really wants to touch the tranny ....The TCU error code is P0732 which means Gear 2 incorrect gear ratio.....and yes, when this all started, it had trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd gear....everytime it tried, it would go into transmission fail safe mode.

Now, after the error code did reset, I was able to go into manual shift mode and start in 2nd gear and keep it in 2nd gear with no problem....I think the problem lies that the car can't shift proper from 1st to 2nd....even if it is just electronic problem, most of the electronics is inside the tranny.

So I guess I am stuck getting a used BMW X5 auto tranny from Bavarian recycling or getting a refurbished one from the dealer.....any other advice or suggestion is appreciated....

1. Well, you know this...the transmission will most likely have to come out, whether it be for repairing it, or a swap.

2. Most likely the problem is inside; opening it up= relatively big $$

3. In terms of major component reliability, BMW's drivetrain has never been a strong point, so you don't know what lies ahead with this transmission even if you fix this problem.

4. I don't think you can actually get that specific auto trans parts from BMW. I bet cores get sent back to BMW NA, or even France. Here's as specific of parts you can get otc: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...38&hg=24&fg=15

It looks like, you'd be better off getting a low milege transmission Bavarian recycling and save yourself potential headache down the road. Just for good measure at this point, there'd be no harm in swapping tcu or any other appropriate/easily accesbile relevant control unit to make sure it's not a fault there. I'm sure a fellow 3.0i owner in your area would be willing to help out..

Agreed, it looks like I'll need a tranny swap. Actually, I did get 290,000 miles on my BMW automatic transmission on my 1989 325i, but it was NOT an electronic transmission. I believe the drivetrain is quite robust and even the tranny with I6 are fine (now, a V8 can destroy the tranmission over time because of the torque), but I think it is an electronic problem within the tranny.

I already called Bavarian Auto Recylcling and they are SOLD out of their tranny and yes, their used X5 tranny is only $1K with 1 year warranty.

Anyhow, if I go to Crevier, then they better sponsor our next WestFest!
