I put mine in S mode when I want to get home!! I wouldn't do it when the engine is cold....because the gear will pull into the red!!

Once in a while, especially after I've been switching from a high speed to a very low one, when I'm accelerating again my X5 will "kick" - it feels almost as if I'm being rear-ended by another vehicle. There's a thud that comes from the rear when this happens too.

Anyone have any idea what's going on? The reason I post this here is because I think it might have to do with the automatic transmission switching gears.
That could be the car downshifting as mentioned earlier and is a normal experience in a normal manual car... dose this happen all the time or just in sport or just in manual?

It has four modes, plus two additional settings. Each is dependent on what you do with the throttle, brake pressure, speed, etc..... ie how hard you are driving it.

When being driven hard, the X5 transmission will move back into a sport mode without you selecting it, which means at low speed that you will find the trans selecting first gear for quick acceleration instead of the usual 2nd gear (normal driving is second gear for economy in stop start traffic and slow speed driving). This tends to manifest itself as a 'slam' in the transmission as the trans is asking for a better gear whilst you are still pressing the throttle. It takes about .75 seconds to request, assess, change and as the revs are usually still rising there is now an imbalance.

It is deliberate by BMW despite many complaints. Vehicles with higher levels of torque through the trans are more likely to experience issues......
