Count me in except that I actually got a door dent three weeks ago because of some jerk that needed to park away from everybody as well. It actually bent the door guard and at first I thought it didn't damage the door. When I got home I noticed the door was also slightly bent!!! Took it to a body shop and they quoted me about $500 plus the BMW door guard. I then showed it at the BMW dealership when I ordered the replacement door guard and they told me to call this Paintless Dent Removal guy. So I called him, he showed up the same day in my driveway, looked at it and after a few minutes he got rid of the dent! This guy was amazing - he even fixed the bent door guard. Total cost $70

The following day I parked my once-again spotless X5 at Officemax, again away from everybody. When I got back, guess what, another beat up pick up truck was parked right next to mine. Even though there was no damage, I was ready for a confrontation and I was actually waiting for the guy to get back to his truck. Fortunately, the better part of me took over, shook my head, and I left the place very quickly just in case. Damn I even thought about keyeng his truck

My theory is you have a 1 in 50 chance of getting a ding if you park next to someone in a parallel parking spot. Do it every week for a year and you are guaranteed a ding.

When you have to park in a parallel spot, my tips are:

1) Try to find a single bay with pillars either side.
2) Park between a pillar and the passenger side of the other car. (There is always a driver; not always a passenger)
3) Check the door of the car you park next to. If their door edge is chipped you know they a "door whacker".
4) Get to know cars with non-pointy bits on their opened door edge.
5) If in doubt, take the wife's car.

This has worked for me so far.

And if you have to park between two cars, park your car a bit closer to the left side. (related to #2)

Oh, don't I know it!!! This really bugs me too. At work I purposely park in an area of the parking lot that NO ONE hardly ever parks (a good few minutes walk across to my office building) & wouldn't you know ... some old beat up minivan or pick up truck always seems to find their way rightnextto&thisclose to my driver's side door that I can BARELY open to get in .... pisses me off to no end.

Is it me....or are parking spots/spaces actually getting smaller in size?

i've actually been sitting in my car when my car got whacked.

i was in the parking lot with my good friend about to get some chinese buffet(19 year old's oasis right there). We're sitting cause I'm on my phone with someone and this guy pulls up next to me. All the sudden i hear this "thump!" and i think something happens in the parking lot somewhere. All the sudden, my friend goes "holy crap dude! that guy just whacked your door!". needless to say, me and him were in shock at this guy. however, he got out of his car and didn't even notice us in the car. we're still there 5 minutes later. this guy comes back out of a store, opens his door and whacks mine again. at this point, i'm ready to jump this guy cause he has yet to notice us or even apologize. i was bout ready to grab the hockey stick in my car and bust open his windshield when i realized i was just in plain and utter shock at what had just occured.

if anyone can top this story, do tell me.

Doesn't it seem that if you have a nice vehicle you can park all the way out at the back of the parking lot and there is no one else around you and when you come back out of the store there is someone parked next to you? This is frustrating!
