Newbie question

Hello all, I am new here and am looking for some advice on purchasing a new X5. My wife is interested in the 3.0 after an exhaustive search for an SUV. Looked at them all ---- Acura MDX, MB ML350/500, Lexus GX470, Tahoe, Volvo XC90, Toaureg, Cayenne, new Audi, Saab (uck!), etc...the X5 is at the top. We are in the Balt/DC market and are wondering what discounts are being offered off of MSRP on new X5's. According to Edmunds TMV pricing (what others are paying), they have new X5's being sold at $100-250 over invoice. Has that been your experience in purchase price? We have been to VOB in Rockville to test drive.

Thank you for your time. Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Pricing

I'm now on my second X5, and my bride drives a 330, all of which were purchased from Towne BMW here in the Buffalo, NY area. Each of the three were purchased at $2,500 over invoice (which is about $2,500 less than sticker on the car). On that experience, plus what I know of domestic car sales, I'd say $100-200 over invoice is D___ good, and you ought to grab it. Of course, the price depends on your area and how much competition there is among dealers, etc.

Also, you must remember that the dealers are in business to make money. They want to sell you a car and give you good service, but they also have to pay the bills, and the salesman who is being so nice to you wants to eat, too. He's probably on straight commission, and every dollar you shave off the sale price affects his income as well.

Too often, I think, we want what we want but aren't willing to pay a fair price, or we expect the car, once we get it to be absolutely perfect, and that it will never break. All that is just not realistic, nor is it fair to the dealer and his employees. We must be willing to pay a fair price, and then, we will be treated fairly in return.

None-the-less, $100-200 over invoice is a steal, and I doubt you'd get anything better on a BMW or any other of the premium German makes. Good luck.

I paid $3000 over invoice - small dealership (5 people total, 6 if you count the janitor) - typically get min 10% discount on parts and labor rate is smaller than the prices I've experienced back east (5 assorted dealers) - It's tough to form a good relationship with a large dealer - but it is so important in so many ways. - best of luck where ever you go - options?????

I think your research has it about right. With the new body style coming out in late-Fall, I would imagine finding them around invoice price. Being in the same area as you, shop around to find the best deal. I bought my 99 3 series at Passport and they were wonderful to work with. I'm currently buying my new e92 from Russel BMW as they've been great so far. Not many of my friends have much good things to say about VOB and Tischer I currently use for service (OK service).

According to Edmunds.com, there is currently $2000 Manufacturer-to-Dealer cash back on all X5 3.0 models, and $2500 cash back on all X5 4.4 models. This offer is good from 7/1/06 to 8/31/06. Because it is Manufacturer-to-Dealer, and not Manufacturer-to-Customer, the dealer has no obligation to tell you about it.

So your $100-250 over invoice is really $2100-2250 over invoice. They could go much lower, but they probably did not want to go lower than invoice or else you would have known something was up. They figured they would fool you into thinking you had a great deal.

I got my X5 3.0 last month before this offer started, and I paid $1k over invoice. I'm in the NYC area.

I would suggest you try for $1k under invoice. Tell them you know about the incentive. Also, since the offer is good until the end of August, you have plenty of time to order a car. Don't be pressured into taking what they have on the lot. I ordered mine and it took 5 weeks to come in.

Thanks a bunch Eric...I did not know about the MTD rebate. Just to let everybody know, I have not even discussed prices yet for the vehicle with any dealer. I saw that Edmunds.com indicates that most have been paying a couple hundred over invoice.
