Looking at the blade where it attaches to the arm, follow the arm down a few inches and you will find a U shaped piece that is attached to the arm and catches the blade. REMOVE it, it is pointless and not necessary. IT is the cause of your problems!

04 x5 3.0 with 40k miles, good so far, still deciding if I need extended warranty, I am on a 5 year payment plan... so~ I don't want my vehicle to hit 100k when I am still paying for it monthly and w/o warranty. would you suggest me getting the warranty? btw~ I already have a spare driver side window regulator at home ready~

Personally I feel you should get that and the service plan

I disagree with the article and I agree with lbeats2001. I have an 01 X5 4.4 w/67K miles. I am the 3rd owner and bought it w/47K miles. The following is what I've had to replace:
Front driver-side window regulator - 47K miles Coolant Level Sensor - 65K miles Both front outer CV boots - 65K miles Front right control arm bushing - 65K miles Differential Seals - 65K miles Power Steering pump seals - 65K miles Luckily, I bought the extended warranty and it almost paid for itself on that one trip. Personally, I don't think that's too bad for a vehicle w/67K miles. Other than that, just basic maintenance stuff (brake pads/rotors, oil & filter, etc.). i've owned 2 early model X5's and have to disagree with that article. '01 3.0 (new) and '02 4.4 (cpo) and have not experience any major issues which would classify the X5 to be a troublesome car... just routine maintenance and the typical recall needed...

Our 3.0i is a 01/01 production date X5. Honestly, while it was under factory warranty, the thing went in at least once in 2 months, if not more frequently. Basically have hadEVERY common X5 problem except for the window regulators. The only powertrain repairs were waterpump + thermostat, cam sensor. Somehow, from the point of a few months before the factory warranty expired till now, it's only gone in once or twice for non-maintenance work. Most of those bugs just got worked out..
Really, I'm amazed that we got let off so easily in terms of quality issues. Not only was it a very early production of the model, it was built in a brand-new factory. Between brand-new design engineering and unexperienced (a new plant) assembly force, I think they did fine. |

Scroll down to the bottom and decide for yourself.
Overall, BMW says that they are innovators in technology and many of the reported problems stem from new owners who have problems using it. I can see that... http://www.jdpa.com/corporate/news/r...asp?ID=2005069

I think that the X5 overall is average when it comes to problems. But i do admit ive owned alot of bimmers and my X5 was the most problematic one iver ever had. My personal opinion is that its because it is assembled in the Usa and not in germany like all my other bimmers were.
