My dealer (and others I have seen) have two options: an Oil Service, and an Oil Change. An oil service is the one planned at 15,000 miles or thereabouts, depending on the service lights. All you really need, however, is the oil change. See if that is why the price was different last time and this time.

As for doing it yourself, it depends on the individual. I do auto repair work myself when I have time, as I enjoy doing it. If it is cold, or wet, or I don't have time, I pay someone to do it. Doing it at home isn't for everyone, and then there are some people that should just never attempt it (having seen the results). Don't DIY unless you have the space, tools, and inclination to do so.

I did mine (on my own) for the first time a couple of weeks ago following Hayaku's DIY article...very simple job. Total cost of about $40 using a BMW oil filter and 8 quarts of Mobil 1. Best of all, I know it's done right...with everything torque properly and that no one else is taking my car out for a "joy ride" or a lunch break! The only time that I go to the dealer is for the "free maintenance" or any warranty works.

FYI...My local deal wants $145 for the "oil service" as the advisor claimed that they don't have or do just the "oil/filter change"

Lol, asking for your money back is out of the question. You willingly already paid the money; just take it as a lesson learnt. Start doing basic maintenance yourself.

You can do that yourself easily. It's on the main page.

I think he means the original poster, as they reside in the same city.

Yep I was wondering because I don't think it's Schomp. It's most likely Murray...

Oh, they also forgot to reset my oil change lights on the dash.[/quote]

btw.. If you get a simple straight forward oil change the dealer's mention there not required to reset the service lights. they only reset the service lights on "scheduled maint services"

hope this helps.
