Clunk noise when wheel is being turned..

Hey all,

I have never bothered to ask because I've had this problem on the car since day one. I get this intermittent loud CLUNKING noise sometimes when I turn the wheel. It seems to only happen at low speed and always figured it was part of the AWD system or a cv joint or something.

ANy ideas on what it is, how to replicate and if i should get it fixed?

Thanks,
B

If it's only while steering, something else is up. A bad control arm balljoint, sway bar end-link, etc would make the sound regardless of steering position.

Is it when you are moving over an even, uneven surface or irrelevant? Is it at either extreme of the steering turn-angle range?

There's a number possibilites, steering rack, binding axle, cv joint etc. Get it up on a lift and check.

take it in no car should have a clunking noise regardless how often it happens the dealer will be able to find it just leave the car with them for a couple of days. there are many posts on here regarding this issue.

My dealer (Pacific BMW) told me it was the tires gripping the pavement as I turned the wheel at low speeds. What a joke.

if that the case your tire will last you about 5k miles,i'm very sure it is the sway bar end-link. turn your wheel to the right or left, and look at the sway bar end link you will see the rubber at both end and i'm sure it bust. or torn.
